How to Convert a Scanned PDF to PowerPoint (OCR Step Included)

Scanned PDFs have no selectable text, so converters skip them. Here's how to OCR first and get a fully editable PPTX.

Upload a scanned PDF to most PDF-to-PPT converters and you'll get back a deck with no text — just images of pages. That's because scanned PDFs are image-only: there's nothing for the converter to extract. The fix is OCR (Optical Character Recognition), and it takes about 30 seconds.

Step 1: Check if your PDF needs OCR

Open the PDF and try to select a paragraph with your cursor. If text highlights, you're fine — skip to Step 3. If nothing highlights or you select a giant rectangle, it's image-only and needs OCR.

Step 2: Run OCR

  • Free: ocrmypdf.com — drag, drop, download. Works for English and 100+ languages.
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro: Tools → Scan & OCR → Recognize Text → In This File.
  • Mac Preview: open PDF, File → Export as PDF (modern Preview includes basic OCR).

Step 3: Convert the OCR'd PDF to PowerPoint

Upload the OCR'd file to pd2ppt, pick a template, review the outline, and click Generate. You'll get a fully editable .pptx with real text — not image screenshots.

Common pitfalls

  • Don't OCR twice — it can garble text. Check after the first pass.
  • Low-quality scans (under 200 DPI) produce OCR errors. Re-scan at 300 DPI if possible.
  • Handwritten notes don't OCR reliably — type them out manually.
